I had the pleasure of meeting these lovely chaps a number of times whilst playing live with Deafen The Creatures, the first being a makeshift outdoor stage at Southport pleasure beach back in March 2011 (there was an abandoned tank in the car park, true story). After discussing the idea of working on an album together Liz and Andy recorded all of the tracks themselves and handed over the stems for mixing. This was a great project as I’d been given the source material and knew exactly what I was working with from day one. Although they told me I had as much creative control over the mix as I wanted, I felt that this album was a showcase of Liz and Andy and didn’t really suit a full blown production. Instead I focused on getting the best out every individual guitar and vocal take with only the occasional use of effects, taking particular attention to the dynamics and harmonics involved. Just By Chance later went on to release the album to much critical acclaim with airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC6 Music whilst touring the UK supporting both Joan Armatrading and Midge Ure.
