Well, this is awkward. I’m not quite sure what to say apart from hello. I guess you’ve already figured out that my name is Daniel Finney and I’m a music composer/audio engineer/producer etc. What you might not already know is that I quit my job last week to turn my life long hobby and profession into my career. At the time of writing this post, my so called website consists of only a few placeholder pages filled with the repeated words of ‘Write something here’ and a few pictures I copied across from Instagram to make it look nice. Hopefully that’s all changed by the time you’re reading this.
Over the next few weeks I’ll be meeting with various people and getting the business side of things set up with a shiny new website and shiny new business cards (amongst many other things) so that I have a very clearly defined and accessible point of contact. I’ve been doing this type of work for a long time now and figured that it was finally time to give it a proper go otherwise I’d probably regret not doing it for the rest of my life. I guess my motivation stems from the fact that sometimes, in terms of employment, you find yourself in a desperately frustrating situation and feel like you can only rely on yourself to make a living.
I’m lucky enough to be able to fall back on my hobby of doing this whole music thing and set out to earn my own keep in life, but I know just as much as anyone else that there’s a massive difference between doing this as a hobby and doing this as a career. It’s going to be a difficult journey at first but I’m surrounded by the most inspiring and supportive people in the world and I’ve got no doubt that once things are up and running then it’ll just feel like normal and that it’s the way it was always meant to be.
That’s what I tell myself before I go to sleep at night anyway…
